Zarif back in Tehran after attending Uzbek president's funeral

Tehran, Sept 3, IRNA - Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif returned back home Saturday evening after visiting Samarkand to attend the funeral of Uzbekistan's late President Islam Karimov.


Zarif left Tehran for Uzbekistan's capital this morning to attend the funeral ceremony.

The Uzbek government confirmed the death of President Islam Karimov on Friday, six days after he was taken to hospital with a suspected brain haemorrhage.

The late president of the Central Asian country was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown Samarkand.

He was Uzbekistan's president for the past 25 years.

President Hassan Rouhani in a message on Friday night extended his condolences on the sad occasion of the demise of Karimov.

The Iranian President sympathized with the Uzbek people and the Family of late President Karimov.
