Iran launches the indigenously-manufactured Jamaran 2 destroyer in the Caspian Sea near the northern port city of Bandar Anzali in the presence of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Jamaran 2, a Wave-class warship, has been designed and built by the experts at Iran’s Defense Ministry and has state-of-the-art navigation equipment and complex defensive systems.

Mostafa Kavakebian announces presidential candidacy
Mostafa Kavakebian, the secretary general of the pro-reform Mardomsalari party (Democracy Party), officially announced that he will run in the presidential election due on June 14.
Kavakebian, a former MP, made the announcement in a news conference in Tehran on Saturday, saying that he has set no condition for his participation in the election, except for the strict implementation of the law.

Former interior minister declares bid for Iran’s presidency
Head of the State Inspectorate Organization of Iran Hojjatoleslam Mostafa Pourmohammadi has officially announced his candidacy for the country’s forthcoming presidential election.

The former interior minister said he would announce his slogan and plans for the electoral campaign during a press conference in the near future, Fars News reported on Sunday.

Iran to try 18 over killing of nuclear scientists
An Iranian news agency reports the judiciary has indicted 18 suspects on charges of involvement in the killing of nuclear scientists.

Since 2010, at least five Iranian nuclear scientists, including a manager at the Natanz enrichment facility, have been killed. Tehran has accused Israel’s Mossad, the CIA and Britain’s MI6 of being behind the assassinations. The U.S. and Britain have denied the allegations, but Israel has not commented.

Iranian parliament approves new Health Minister
Iran’s official news agency reports that parliament has approved the appointment of a new health minister by the tightest of margins, the latest sign of acrimony between outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the conservatives who dominate the legislature.

The Sunday report by IRNA says 113 of the 224 lawmakers present voted for Mohammad Hasan Tarighat Monfared.
