Weakening Muslims strengthens Israel, warns Iran

7 Aug 2016 - 9:56

A senior Iranian official has lashed out at some regional countries for setting up unconstructive coalitions to limit the capacities of states in the region, saying any effort to chip away at the unity of Muslim nations will serve the Israeli regime.

“Any measure which will lead to the weakening of Muslim countries’ capabilities is incorrect and in line with strengthening the Zionist regime [Israel],” Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said in a meeting with Afghanistan's National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar in Tehran on Saturday.

“The bogus and child-killing Zionist regime is the main enemy of the Muslim world,” he added.

The SNSC secretary further pointed to the growing terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and said certain powers are spreading insecurity through sectarian conflicts and terrorism to "wear out the national capacities and regional status of Muslim countries"

Shamkhani emphasized that the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan since the US occupation of the country has led to a growing security crisis there.

Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity 15 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.

The war removed the Taliban from power but insecurity is still rampant despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.

The Taliban have intensified their attacks following the appointment of their new leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in a report late last month that at least 3,726 civilians were killed or wounded between January and June of the current year.

According to the UN mission, the anti-government elements remain responsible for 60 percent of the civilian casualties.

Shamkhani also stressed the importance of improving comprehensive and strategic cooperation between Tehran and Kabul and holding regular negotiations on security issues.

Iran and Afghanistan must adopt strategies to establish sustainable security along their common border and fight terrorism, he said.

The senior Iranian official expressed the Islamic Republic’s readiness to draw up common strategies with Afghanistan in politics, security, economy and border issues and said security in border areas would play a prominent role in developing the economy and infrastructure of the region, increasing trade exchanges and decreasing drug trafficking.

Collective cooperation necessary for anti-terror fight

The Afghan official, for his part, praised Iran’s constructive role in his country’s development and progress and said an all-out campaign against extremism and terrorism would be possible only through interaction among all countries.

He called for the expansion of cooperation with neighboring countries to establish lasting security along the borders and help in the fight against terrorism and the transit of drugs.

Hanif Atmar is in Tehran for a two-day official visit at the invitation of the SNSC secretary to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.
