AEOI dismisses German Chancellor's "Baseless" claims against Iran's N. program

25 Jul 2016 - 15:06

TEHRAN (FNA)- Spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi rejected claims by German Chancellor Angela Merkel against Tehran's nuclear program as "baseless".

"We haven’t decided at all to supply any goods from outside the country and therefore, we have not taken any measure in this regard. This has also been stated (before) by Mr. (Ali Akbar) Salehi (the AEOI head) and based on this, the report presented by Mrs. Merkel quoting the German intelligence system is baseless, meaning that we have not intended and we have not taken any measure to supply our needed goods through an uncommon and unconventional method from Germany," Kamalvandi said on Monday.

"These remarks are merely their incorrect speculations," he added.

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency claimed in its annual report earlier this month that Iran has a “clandestine” effort to seek illicit nuclear technology and equipment from German companies “at what is, even by international standards, a quantitatively high level.”

Based on the report, Merkel said in the Bundestag that Iran "continued unabated to develop its rocket program in conflict with the relevant provisions of the UN Security Council”.

Merkel claimed that NATO's anti-missile system targets Iran's rocket program and was "developed purely for defense".

After her remarks, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi lambasted Merkel for her "unreal and unconstructive" comments, and said Tehran's missile program doesn’t violate the UN Security Council resolution 2231.

"We have announced that our missile activities are for defensive purposes, aren’t related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the last July nuclear deal inked by Iran and the world powers) and don’t violate the JCPOA and (UNSC) Resolution 2231," Takht Ravanchi said.

He said Iran's missiles are no way in violation of Resolution 2231 as have not been designed to carry nuclear warheads.

"Therefore, Mrs. Merkel's remarks are far from reality and are not constructive and we certainly don’t expect a country with which we have friendly relations to take such positions," Takht Ravanchi said.
