19 Jul 2016 - 22:23

Russia is ready to buy heavy water from Iran to help Tehran meet commitments under comprehensive nuclear agreements with world powers, Alexey Karpov, Russia's deputy permanent envoy to international organizations in Vienna said Tuesday.

VIENNA (Sputnik) — According to Karpov, Tehran does not have surplus heavy water stores at present, maintaining the agreed 130 metric tons limit.

"We are ready to assist Iran in this area through purchases of of necessary amounts of this material, although this issue has not been discussed in detail so far," Karpov said.

Under the terms of the nuclear agreement, Iran must keep its stock of heavy water below 130 tons and later under 90 tons.

Iran and six world powers, including the United States and Russia, signed the JCPOA agreement whereby Tehran agreed to dismantle aspects of its nuclear program to ensure it is used for peaceful purposes in exchange for sanctions relief.
