Iran nuclear deal 'lives up to expectations' - Kerry

14 Jul 2016 - 23:00

The nuclear deal reached with Iran one year ago has lived up to its expectations, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on the agreement’s anniversary on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in January 2016 that Iran had fulfilled its obligations under the nuclear pact, prompting Brussels to scale down nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions.

"As of today, one year later, a program…lived up to its expectations, and thus far produced an ability to be able to create a peaceful nuclear program with Iran living up to its part of this bargain and obligation," Kerry stated in Paris.

The state secretary underscored that the United States continues to have "other real issues" with Iran, and Washington intends to resolve those matters.
"But we believe that the door that has been opened as a consequence of this dialogue gives us an opportunity to be able to do exactly that," Kerry added.

On July 14, 2015, the P5+1 group of countries, consisting of the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, and Iran, reached the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
