Iran spurns UN call for Parchin visit

5 Mar 2013 - 21:49

Iran news headlines on Tuesday include Iran rejection of IAEA nuke inspection access to Parchin site; Big powers calling for 'early' results in nuclear negotiations with Iran; Iran rejection of Gulf claims of country interference in the grouping’s internal affairs; 2 people sentencing in plot to ship aircraft parts to Iran and Netanyahu warning on “clear and credible military threat” of nuclear Iran.
Iran rejects IAEA nuke inspection
Iran has rejected an immediate inspection of the Parchin military base to take samples to test for the presence of materials used in the development of nuclear weapons.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparact, Teheran is making efforts to achieve an agreement that the UN agency recognizes Iran’s right to implement its peaceful nuclear programme. Iran, on its part, will take necessary decisions to remove concerns, the spokesman said.
Big powers want “early” results in Iran diplomacy
Six world powers will call for quick tangible results in nuclear negotiations with Iran that resumed in February after an eight-month break, according to a draft joint statement obtained by Reuters on Tuesday.

The draft being considered by the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and Britain described a February 26-27 meeting with Iran in Almaty, Kazakhstan, as “useful”. The two sides are due to hold further talks in early April at the same venue.

Iran rejects Gulf claims of ‘interference’
Iran rejected Tuesday claims by the Gulf Cooperation Council that it is interfering in the grouping’s internal affairs, insisting that Tehran stays away from domestic issues of other countries.

“Iran’s intervention in Bahrain’s affairs is a claim contrary to reality and it is made in order to escape from the real problems and will bear no results,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said at his weekly press conference.
2 sentenced in plot to ship aircraft parts to Iran
An Iranian national has been sentenced to 23 months in federal prison and an American who worked as an airline pilot received a 46-month sentence for their roles in a plot to ship helicopters and aircraft parts to Iran’s state-run civilian airline in violation of the U.S. trade embargo.
Netanyahu: “Credible military threat” needed to stop Iran nuclear drive
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday that Iran was getting closer to being able to build a nuclear bomb despite sanctions and diplomacy and said a “clear and credible military threat” was needed to halt Tehran’s program.

Speaking via satellite link from Jerusalem, Netanyahu used an address to an influential U.S. pro-Israel lobbying group to underscore Israeli impatience with Washington’s strategy on Iran, a message that could foreshadow his talks with President Barack Obama on a Middle East visit later this month.
