12 May 2016 - 13:52

TEHRAN, May 11 (MNA) – Fresh round of Iran-Turkey electricity talks kicked off Wednesday morning in Shiraz aiming to establish the first ECO Regional Electricity Market (REM).

The second joint meeting of Iran and Turkey began in the city of Shiraz over the formation of ECO REM with participation of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Secretariat.

The new round of negotiations is also attended by representatives of other ministries of the two countries.

The conference has started in line with reached agreements of the 26th session of ECO Regional Planning Council (RPC) and has been attended by representatives from ECO Energy Committee, an 8-strong Turkish delegation comprising officials of the neighbor country’s Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) as well as Turkish Electricity Transmission Co. (TE?A?).

Moreover, the congress is attended by representatives from Iran’s Energy Ministry, Iran Power Generation and Transmission Company (Persian acronym: TAVANIR), Energy Ministry as well as Ministry of Oil.

Currently, Iran is exchanging energy with all border countries and so far electrical exchanges have been conducted with Iraq, Iraqi Kurdistan, Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan Republic, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Turkey’s private sector is eager to purchase electricity from Iran as certain talks have so far been conducted on the issue.

In time with the Iranian Oil Ministry’s plan to launch indirect electricity export to Turkey by boosting natural gas exports to the neighboring country for production and sale of electricity, Iraq has turned into a traditional customer of Iranian electricity over the past few years.
