UN Syria envoy likely to visit Tehran

TEHRAN, Apr. 06 (MNA) – The UN special envoy to Syria announced he would likely pay a visit to Tehran to discuss Syrian issue with Iranian officials, Sputniknews reported.


Staffan de Mistura who is currently in Russia, made the remarks before his meeting with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov on Tuesday.

“I had plans to travel to Iran, Syria, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to hold talks to discuss the ways to achieve stability in Syria, however, I realized to change my first visit to Russia,” UN envoy underlined while answering reporters on Tuesday.

Calling ceasefire a key solution to the crisis in Syria, De Mistura said, “We should spare no effort to stop any unrest in Syria.”

"We need to further develop the political process, to work on strengthening it, and on further progress. It is the cornerstone of our work," he underlined.

During Mistura's meeting with Russian FM, Lavrov said Russia will support the efforts of UN mediator Staffan de Mistura to promote direct and inclusive talks between the sides in Syria's conflict.
