All quiet on the Syrian front: Ceasefire generally observed

7 Mar 2016 - 15:25

The recently-brokered ceasefire has mostly taken effect on the territory of Syria, aside from limited sporadic violence, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.

MOSCOW, March 7 (Sputnik) — The ceasefire on the Syrian territory is generally observed, only sporadic provocations and shellings have been noted, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said Monday.

"Generally, the ceasefire on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic is observed. Only sporadic provocations and shelling could be noted," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told reporters.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Islamic State, which is banned in several countries, including Russia.

On February 22, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in Syria. The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2268 endorsing the Russia-US agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria on February 26, shortly before the ceasefire came into force. The ceasefire took effect on February 27.
