Daesh attacks against US targets likely to increase

4 Mar 2016 - 12:53

The United States remains the No. 1 target for Daesh terrorists and attacks are expected to become more frequent in the years ahead, the US House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee warned in a new report.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The report, released on Thursday, said that the numbers represent a relatively high success ratio that will likely continue to influence the terror group’s emphasis on "frequent attempts rather than fewer, long-term plots."
"The group’s focus on external operations has risen significantly," the report said. "In 2014, there were 19 ISIS-linked [Daesh] plots against the West; in 2015, the figure more than doubled to 48. More than 40 percent of [75] total plots have been executed, while the rest were disrupted."

In addition, the report explains that the United States is the No. 1 target for the ISIS, with more than one-third of its external operations aimed at the United States or its interests overseas.

The report also warns that refugee flows from Syria and availability of fake passports are being exploited by Daesh to deploy terrorists.

Plots recounted in the report include a December 2015 attack in the US state of California, which killed 14 civilians; an attempted attack in Texas, a plot to detonate explosives at New York City landmarks; a plot to shoot tourists on Florida beaches, a plot to live-stream a shooting rampage at a college campus and a plot to detonate pipe bombs on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

The rise in Daesh-related incidents made 2015 the most active year for homegrown jihadist terrorism ever tracked in the United States, the report concludes.

Daesh, has been designated a terrorist organization and is outlawed in the United States, Russia as well as in numerous other countries.
