Iranian speaker blasts S. Arabia's militarism in Mideast

3 Feb 2016 - 16:38

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani lashed out at Saudi Arabia for waging war against the regional states, saying the policy is doomed to failure.

Speaking in a meeting with German Foreign Minster Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Tehran on Wednesday, Larijani criticized Riyadh's warmongering policies, and added, "Riyadh's policies will never succeed just as the way US policies didn't succeed in the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan."

He referred to the stands taken by certain countries, including Saudi Arabia, in the Vienna talks on Syria, and added, "Continuation of the talks is more like a joke. This is because the participants refuse to change course. They seek their own interests and they use terrorism as means towards an end."

Steinmeier, for his part, similar voiced concerns over the spread of crises and tensions throughout the region, and said, "We failed to resolve these pressing issues. I am confident that Iran and Germany are now more than ever interested in resolving the region's issues since we have now tasted the sweetness of friendly ties (after the nuclear deal between Tehran and the world powers)."

In relevant remarks on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had blasted Saudi Arabia for disguising terrorists as dissidents in order to include them in the ongoing Geneva talks.

"Those aiding the extremist groups in the Arab country must not be allowed to join the negotiations as such action will discredit the UN and the talks," Zarif warned, addressing a joint press conference with Steinmeier in Tehran.

The Iranian foreign minister further reiterated Tehran’s position that no external actor should ever be allowed to decide for the future of Syria.

"Those who had laid out preconditions for negotiations in Syria are the ones that caused the present war and bloodshed in the first place,” Zarif noted.

His remarks came after Saudi Arabia introduced Mohammed Mustafa Alouch, the politburo chief of Jeish al-Islam terrorist group, as an opposition activist to attend the talks. Mohammed Mustafa is the cousin of Jeish al-Islam commander Zahran Alouch who was recently killed by Syrian forces.

Also, late January, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blasted Saudi Arabia for supporting terror groups and launching wars of aggression against the Muslim nations, and said Riyadh should apologize for what it has done.

"If Saudi Arabia apologizes a hundred times to the Muslim nations for what it has done in the region, for the massacre of the Muslims, and for the Mina incident, it will still be not enough," President Rouhani said at a press conference in Rome.
