Yemen claim of Iran arms smuggling, West agenda: Analyst

9 Feb 2013 - 17:29

Yemen’s recent allegation about Iran smuggling arms into the Arab country is part of a Western, Israeli and Saudi plot aimed at intensifying pressures against Tehran, a Middle East expert tells Press TV.
“All of that (allegation of arms smuggling) is just because the West and Israel became so desperate [that] they want to slow down this industrial and scientific progress taking place in Iran, in a country that is militarily powerful and they cannot attack [it],” said Saab Shaath in a Friday interview with Press TV.
“They just wanted to do anything to demonize the country (Iran) and impose more sanctions [against it]...so the people, the Iranian people themselves, will move against their government. That’s the only hope they are playing at, at the moment,” he added.
Last week, Yemen’s President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi accused Iran of smuggling arms into the Arab country. The Yemeni government asked the United Nations to probe a seized ship it claims contained Iran-made weapons.

Officials in Washington had earlier said that the ship was intercepted on January 23 in coordination with the US Navy.

Tehran strongly refuted Yemen’s claim, saying that Iran attaches importance to maintaining security and stability of regional countries, particularly Yemen.

Shaath argued that the new anti-Iran allegation seeks to “guarantee…the continuation of the cooperation of the Yemeni government to serve the United States of America’s agenda and that of Saudi Arabia.”

The analyst pointed out that Saudi Arabia and the CIA seek to keep Yemen destabilized and accuse Iran of interfering in the Arab country.

The anti-Iran allegations come as the US has intensified drone strikes in Yemen sparking fear among the Yemeni residents. The Yemeni government has approved these drone attacks.

Yemenis have held several anti-US rallies across the country over the past months and have called on their government to cut all ties with Washington over the deadly airstrikes.
