Cooperation with revolutionary guards shows democratic nature of Iran

21 Jan 2016 - 10:08

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Wednesday that Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were "no problem" for the Iranian government, and moreover, their cooperation demonstrates the democratic nature of Iranian statehood.

DAVOS (Sputnik) – This is in example of Iran having a "multitude of views" which signifies a "good, healthy and vital democracy," he added.
"I do not see the Revolutionary Guards as a problem. You've seen the cooperation between the Iranian government, the Foreign Ministry and the Revolutionary Guards in the release of US sailors, which was smooth, happened in a very short interval," Zarif said.

Last week, Iran seized two US vessels, which were en route to Bahrain, holding the sailors on board captive. The marines were taken to international waters and freed. Later, a source in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps told Sputnik that US vessels had entered Iranian territorial waters due to a technical fault.

IRGC is an elite Iranian military-political organization, formed of the units supporting the 1979 Islamic Revolution, led by Shia cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khameini, who became the First Iranian Supreme leader.

Current Iran's Supreme leader is Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei. The Iranian president is responsible for the executive powers and is the second important person after the supreme leader.
