3 Jan 2016 - 16:02

Tehran, January 3, The Iran Project – Tehran city council has approved the double-emergency plan to name one of the streets of Tehran after prominent Shia cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

A member of Tehran City Council, Mohsen Pirhadi, announced on Sunday that the Council approved the double-emergency plan to name one of the streets of Tehran after top Shia cleric sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr.

Pirhadi said no street has been chosen yet, adding that council's Naming Commission will review the case, and then it will be discussed in the next meeting of the Council.

Following the Riyadh regime’s execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and 46 other people on Saturday, the name of one of the streets in Mashhad was also changed to Sheikh Nimr.

Saudi Arabia executed Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr along 46 other people in defiance of international calls for the release of the prominent Shia cleric and other jailed political dissidents in the kingdom.

The Iranian government and religious leaders across the Middle East have condemned the execution of a prominent Shia cleric by Saudi Arabia and warned of repercussions for the country’s royal family.
