Iranian delegation to attend Kuwait forum on Syrian refugees

29 Jan 2013 - 21:14

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-AbdollahianA high-ranking Iranian delegation led by a deputy foreign minister will attend the ‘International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria’ in Kuwait.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will attend the one-day conference in Kuwait City on Wednesday.

The conference comes in response to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call for an international conference for donors to support the Syrian people during the time of crisis in the Arab country.

The event, presided by Ban Ki-moon, aims to collect an estimated amount of 1.5 billion dollars to be granted to the Syrian refugees in neighboring countries.

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest, which has killed many people including large numbers of security personnel.

The prolonged violence in the Arab country has forced many of its citizens, including Palestinian refugees in the country, to migrate to neighboring states.

On January 11, The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said a total of 612,134 Syrians had been registered or were in the process of being registered as refugees in Syria’s neighboring countries.

On Wednesday, Iran’s first consignment of humanitarian aid was delivered to Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and certain Western states and their regional allies such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have been trying to fuel the turmoil.
