Mediterranean migrant death toll reaches 3,406

4 Nov 2015 - 10:27

GENEVA, Nov. 04 (MNA) – Some 400 refugees died in October while trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean Sea, whose death toll has reached 3,406 this year, the International Organization for Migration reported Tuesday.

According to that agency, during the first three days of November, another 18 undocumented immigrants were killed and the toll is expected to increase due to the worsening of weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Serbia and Croatia implemented on Tuesday a train system to control the flow of immigrants, and ensure their transfer to Slovenia, then to Austria, and finally to Germany.

Such initiative is part of a series of measures recently adopted during a special summit convened by the European Commission (EC), to discuss the situation in the Balkans, one of the most affected regions by the current crisis.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, warned on possible clashes between the nations of that area if her country close the border with Austria, which ruled out for the moment.

Instead, the Hungarian Parliament approved a resolution stating that the EC does not have the legal authority to establish a system of mandatory fees for the redistribution of refugees.
