Director general of Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said that Russia has been supplying Iran with air defense systems and several types of radio electronics, while continuing negotiations on military-technical cooperation.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia has been supplying Iran with air defense systems and several types of radio electronics, while continuing negotiations on military-technical cooperation, director general of Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said Monday

"The list of weapons prohibited to be delivered to Iran does not apply to a number of arms, including air defense systems, several types of radio electronics. The Russian Federation through Rosoboronexport is maintaining contacts exactly in these areas and delivering exactly these types of weapons to Iran," Anatoly Isaykin said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television.

In 2007, Russia and Iran signed a $800-million deal for the delivery of five S-300 missile systems. In 2011, Iran sued Rosoboronexport in the Geneva Arbitration Court after Moscow suspended the contract in 2010, citing a UN Security Council resolution that placed an arms embargo on Tehran.

In April 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on the contract, shortly after the P5+1 group of international negotiators and Iran reached a framework nuclear agreement to remove all economic sanctions against Tehran in exchange for its pledge to cut back on uranium enrichment and the number of centrifuges in the country.

In August, an Iranian Defense Ministry source told Sputnik that the delivery of the S-300 systems could pave the way for new deals between the two countries.
