Iran, Russia seeking to eradicate terrorism: Syria FM

21 Oct 2015 - 14:57

Syrian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Walid al-Muallem says Iran and Russia seek to eliminate terrorism.

Muallem hailed efforts by Tehran and Moscow to contribute to the fight against terrorism and said Iran and Russia play an important role in finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

He was speaking during a meeting on Tuesday with the Director General of West Asian and North African Affairs Department at the Chinese Foreign Ministry Deng Li, in Damscus, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

Muallem also thanked all states which support his country, saying Syria will do everything it can to fight terrorism and defend its people, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also slammed the US for providing military and financial support for terrorists, saying Washington is not serious in the campaign against terrorist groups such as Daesh.

Deng, for his part, expressed optimism that Syria would get out of the current crisis as soon as possible, stressing the importance of international efforts to contribute to fighting terrorism and finding a political solution to the Syria war.

Syria has been plagued by a foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. According to the UN, more than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in the war while millions have also been displaced.

Since September 30, Russia has been pounding the positions of Daesh and those of other terrorist groups in Syria upon a request by the Damascus government.

Iran has also been providing consultations to the Arab country in its battle against terrorists.
