IAEA report put an end to 12-year challenge: Araqchi

16 Oct 2015 - 22:55

Tehran, Oct 16, IRNA – Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi said on Friday that report by the International Atomic Energy Agency yesterday put an end to a challenge which had implicated Iran for 12 years and an excuse for sanctions.

He told IRNA that the yesterday's report by the IAEA was a very important stage of a roadmap signed between Iran and the UN nuclear agency about Possible Military Dimension currently being implemented.
IAEA in a statement on Thursday announced that Iran has done necessary cooperation with the UN body and provided it with everything that was essential.
Evaluating the report, Araqchi said that following completion of the agency's information, Iran-IAEA cooperation ended and it verified that Iran has done whatever necessary to resolve the outstanding issues.
He pointed out that in fact the UN nuclear agency has no question over PMD from Iran because Iran has answered all queries and provided necessary documents denoting transparency of its activities.
Director general of IAEA will start compiling the report as of today which is to be considered a final assessment about PMD, he said, noting that as per the roadmap, Yukiya Amano should present the report to the IAEA Board of Governors no later than December 15.
The Board of Governors for its part will study the report, Araqchi said, noting that Group 5+1 will also send a draft to the Board of Governors to close the PMD file.
Araqchi further noted that yesterday, a major step was taken in line with completion of Iran-IAEA cooperation and the dossier will close in the next stage.
In light of the transparent measures taken by Iran, IAEA is expected to present its fair evaluation over non-existence of illegal activities in Iran, away from politicking, Araqchi said.
'Given the fact that nuclear deal has taken its legal course both in Iran and G 5+1, we will announce the 90th day as 'Adoption Day' which falls on Sunday.'
On this day, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federico Mogherini will issue a joint statement and, as per Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, EU's council of ministers will remove all European sanctions and US President Obama is to stop implementation of Congressional sanctions on the same day.
The law for lifting sanctions will take force once Iran discharge its obligation as well, he said, noting that after that removal of sanctions will take place on the 'Implementation Day'.
Araqchi hoped that the day will be within one or two next months.
He made it clear that plans are underway to form first joint commission in Vienna one day after Adoption Day (Monday).
Iran-G5+1 commission comprising deputy ministers will officially start activities on the same day, he said.
The agenda of the commission include review of JCPOA, ways to fulfill commitments by both sides between Adoption Day and the Implementation Day.
The commission will last one day but the experts will start their works on Saturday and they will stay in Vienna for a week if needed, he said.
