Salehi confers with Chinese counterpart on new nuclear power plant

Beijing, Aug 26, IRNA – Iran and China on Wednesday called for implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and expansion of cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi held talks with Chinese senior officials including Chairman of China Atomic Energy Authority Xu Dazhe.

The two sides underlined development of cooperation to utilize peaceful nuclear energy.

Iranian Atomic Energy Organization is willing to develop cooperation with Chinese Atomic Energy Authority on construction of small new power plant with the capacity of 100 megawatts with cost-effective expenses in light of the capability to generate electricity for limited area, producing industrial steam plant as well as desalination of water.

Salehi and Xu underlined that construction of such power plants to generate a total amount of 1,000 megawatts electricity to supply to the national grid.

The two officials assigned related experts of both countries to consider necessary grounds for development of cooperation.

Salehi is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with his Chinese counterpart.

Salehi is scheduled to meet with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday evening.

Head of AEOI and accompanying delegation arrived in Beijing on Wednesday morning.

They are due to visit the China National Nuclear Corporation, China Institute of Atomic Energy and some other Chinese institutions active in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.
