Iran fears no Syria spillover into Lebanon: envoy

17 Jan 2013 - 17:04

Iran’s Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar RoknabadiBEIRUT: Iran is not worried about a spillover of the Syria crisis into neighboring Lebanon, Iranian Ambassador Ghazanfar Roknabadi said Thursday.
“We have always stressed that for as long as the various political parties in Lebanon are wise leaders and use reason to assess issues, there is no fear or concern over Lebanon,” Roknabadi said following talks with Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour.

He was responding to reporters’ questions of whether Tehran fears the Syrian conflict could spill over into Lebanon.

Roknabadi said Iran calls for unity and solidarity among all the Lebanese parties “to face one enemy: Israel.”

He said his meeting with Mansour focused on the latest developments at both the international and regional levels as well as prospects for cooperation between Tehran and Beirut.

After talks with former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora Wednesday, Roknabadi said Iran is committed to keeping Lebanon out of the Syria crisis.

He said Tehran was working to find a solution to the Syrian conflict through an Iranian initiative that would bring about a cease-fire.

In response to a question, Roknabadi said Thursday that his meeting with Siniora went well.

“We exchanged views on the latest regional developments since Lebanon is affected by the crisis in Syria.”

The Iranian envoy said he also discussed with Siniora ways to spare Lebanon the negative repercussions of the Syria crisis, “with particular emphasis on the Iranian initiative, which is part of the Syrian initiative to resolve the crisis and focuses on a political solution after military clashes reached a deadlock.”
