Iran to name first female ambassador soon

10 Aug 2015 - 14:44

Tehran, August 10, The Iran Project – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister says country's first female ambassador will be named shortly.

The appointment of Iran’s first female ambassador is still on the agenda of the Foreign Ministry and will be realized shortly, Iranian deputy foreign minister Hassan Ghashghavi told Shargh newspaper on Monday.

Appointing a female ambassador was one of the promises of Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif but he didn’t speak of the issue seriously in the last two years.

However, after the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, it seems that Iran’s Foreign Ministry is going to fulfill some promises it made to women.

A few Months ago, several media announced that the Iranian government will appoint a woman to a post of ambassador for the first time since the beginning of the Islamic Republic in 1979.

It was reported In April that Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham would be appointed as an ambassador, thus earning the title of the first -and so far the only- Iranian female ambassador abroad.
