Hamedan to host 13th intl. Open Chess Tournament

HAMEDAN, Aug. 02 (MNA) – The 13th International Open Chess Tournament, Avicenna Cup, is scheduled to be held in Hamedan, home to the Avicenna monument.


The 13th edition of the Open Chess Tournament, Avicenna Cup, is scheduled to be held on 2-9 September, 2015 in Hamden.

The previous edition of the tournament was held in 2014 after a two year hiatus, said Ahmad Alibabaei, head of Hamedan’s Chess Association.

“Over 300 chess players are expected to take part in the tournament, about 50 percent of whom will be from other provinces. Some 20 to 30 players from other countries are also expected to participate,” said Alibabaei.

The tournament will be played according to the FIDE laws of chess and based on the Swiss System in 9 or 11 rounds.

In addition to cash prizes and certificates of honor to be awarded to the top players by Hamedan Chess Association, the tournament will also have an impact on the players' world rankings, he said.
