Iran FM fails to convince MPs on nuclear talks

20 May 2015 - 12:24

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has failed to convince some lawmakers regarding the talks between Tehran and the P5+1 countries over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Zarif on Tuesday attended a session of the Parliament (Majlis)'s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee to respond to questions raised by 15 legislators about two main issues, namely the Foreign Ministry’s performance and the nuclear talks.

The Parliament representatives accepted the minister’s clarifications about the Foreign Ministry’s performance on subjects such as the presence of foreign nationals, including the Afghans, in Iran as well as border issues.

Zarif, however, failed to convince 10 legislators who raised questions about the nuclear negotiations, particularly the Foreign Ministry’s refusal to release a fact sheet regarding a mutual understanding reached between Tehran and the six global powers in Switzerland in April, and also the Iranian nuclear negotiators’ alleged kowtowing to the six countries' demands.

The foreign minister will therefore attend an open session of Parliament to answer questions about the nuclear issue.

Speaking to the Fars News Agency, a member of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Mohammad Hassan Asafari, quoted Zarif as saying that no one dares to threaten Iran at the negotiating table.

Iran and the P5+1 countries - the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – reached a mutual understanding in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.

Iran and the six countries are seeking to finalize a comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program based on the Lausanne statement by the end of June.

The Iranian lawmakers could impeach Zarif if he fails to convince them at the Parliament open session.
