Persian Gulf Arab states back Iran nuclear deal: Qatari emir

15 May 2015 - 22:18

The Qatari emir says the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC) backs a possible final deal between Iran and the P5+1 group over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

“The [US] president spoke about the … agreement with Iran and I am here to say that the [P]GCC welcomes this agreement,” said Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in a joint press conference with US President Barack Obama on Thursday, the Guardian reported.

"We hope at the same time that this will be a key factor for stability in the region," the Qatari emir added.

The remarks came at the end of the Camp David summit in Maryland, where the representatives of the six countries - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar,  Saudi Arabia, and the UAE - held talks with Obama on a range of issues, including the Iranian nuclear program.

Negotiators from Iran and the P5+1 group of countries started a fresh round of talks on drafting the text of a final deal over Tehran’s nuclear program in the Austrian city of Vienna on May 12.

Ahead of this round of talks, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran will not cave in to excessive demands by the opposite side in the course of the talks, stressing that the parameters agreed upon by the two sides last month in the Swiss city of Lausanne constitute the basis for drafting a final nuclear deal.

“Iran will brook no excessive demands. The agreed parameters are those confirmed by the two sides in Lausanne and these parameters need to be stipulated in a written agreement by Iran and the P5+1,” Zarif said at a joint press conference with South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane on Monday.

Iran and the P5+1 countries are seeking to finalize a comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program by the end of June. The two sides reached a mutual understanding in Lausanne, Switzerland, on April 2.
