Protesters return to Ferguson over Freddie Gray’s death

30 Apr 2015 - 13:04

Demonstrators have returned to Ferguson, Missouri for a second night to protest the death of an African-American man, who died of spinal injuries while in the custody of Baltimore police.

Dozens of people marched down the streets of Ferguson on Wednesday night, calling for police reforms and expressing solidarity with the people of Baltimore in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray.

They chanted "No justice; no peace. No racist police," and also referenced the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a white Ferguson police officer in August.

The death of Brown, who was black and unarmed, led to many protests in Ferguson, a predominantly black suburb of St. Louis.

Up to 300 people participated in the Ferguson protests on Tuesday night, Ferguson Police Department spokesman Jeff Small said Wednesday. Three people were shot over the course of protests.

Thousands of people hit the streets in Baltimore and several other US cities, including Boston, New York, Indianapolis and Washington, DC, on Wednesday to protest the death of Gray.

Gray died on April 19, a week after an encounter with police that left him with grave spinal injuries. Authorities have not explained how or when his spine was injured.

Police have said Gray was arrested after he made eye contact with officers and ran away. Officers pushed Gray to the ground, handcuffed him and placed him into a police van.

Baltimore is the latest US city to experience mass civil unrest triggered by the deaths of black men over the past year at the hands of police in New York, Ferguson, Cleveland, and elsewhere.

In a study published last year by Harvard University, the Baltimore metropolitan area ranked near the bottom of major US cities in terms of social and economic mobility.
