Deal on Iran nuclear program impossible if sanctions remain in place

29 Mar 2015 - 15:25

Chief of Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi said that the deal on Iran's nuclear program is impossible if the P5+1 group is not ready to lift sanctions imposed on Tehran.

LAUSANNE (Sputnik) — It will be impossible to reach a deal on Iran's nuclear program if the P5+1 group is not ready to lift sanctions imposed on Tehran, Chief of Iranian Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi said Sunday.
"If the technical issues are resolved, but sanctions are not lifted, then no deal will be possible," Salehi told reporters Sunday.

The announcement came on the final day of the most recent round of talks on Tehran’s nuclear issue that kicked off on Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Iran and the P5+1 group of international negotiators, comprising the United Kingdom, France, China, Russia, the United States and Germany, are expected to agree upon a political framework agreement by the end of March, while the final deal is to be concluded by the end of June. The West has long accused Iran for trying to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of civilian nuclear program, and imposed several rounds of sanctions against the country.

The agreement could contribute to easing the international sanctions in exchange for curbs on Tehran’s nuclear research and increased monitoring of nuclear facilities.
