Saudi campaign in Yemen serves Israel: Iran ambassador to Lebanon

28 Mar 2015 - 17:56

BEIRUT: Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon called for an end to the Saudi-led “aggression” against Yemen Saturday, saying that the aggravation of regional disputes only served Israel’s interests.

Mohammad Fathali reiterated Iran’s opposition to Saudi-led coalition battling Houthi rebels in Yemen, saying that military intervention breached the country’s sovereignty and harmed the unity of its people.

He called on Arab states to respect “the will of the Yemeni people” and urged meaningful dialogue between local factions in an effort to achieve an inclusive government and national unity.

The continued aggression on Yemen will spark regional instability, which in turn only benefits Israel, he said.

The destruction of Arab states and aggravating differences between them, according to the ambassador, falls in line with a "strategic scheme" drawn up by Israel.

The campaign of airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition was launched Thursday amid an offensive by Houthi rebels who were on the verge of capturing the southern port city of Aden, where the country's president was being holed up.
