Iran sanctions situation unchanged as deadline nears - UN Security Council

25 Mar 2015 - 14:50

As the deadline in the Iran nuclear talks with the P5+1 group approaches, the UN Security Council says no new reports have been submitted to the Iran Sanctions Committee in the last 90 days.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Marchesi pointed out that the committee is still waiting for Iran's response with regard to several incidents investigated by its panel of experts.
"No new incidents have been reported to the Committee during the current reporting period," Sanctions Committee chairman Román Oyarzun Marchesi, who is Spain's Ambassador to the United Nations, said on Tuesday.
Referring to the ongoing P5+1 talks, Marchesi said that "in the event of a comprehensive solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, the Committee decided it would revert at the appropriate time on the Panel's recommendation to provide specific guidance to Member States on any possible implications for the relevant Security Council measures, once an outcome was known."

Iran and the P5+1 group of international mediators, which includes Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, are facing the end of March deadline to reach a political framework agreement on the nuclear issue. The next round of negotiations on Iran's controversial nuclear program is set to begin on March 26 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The deadline for a long-term comprehensive agreement with Iran, which will ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear development, has been set for July, 2015.
