The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is to adopt a resolution aimed at blocking off the revenues of ISIL terrorists operating in parts of Syria and Iraq.
On Thursday, the 15-nation UN body is expected to adopt the Russian-drafted resolution, which calls for sanctions against individuals and entities that trade oil with the ISIL extremists and militants from other Takfiri groups, including al-Nusra Front and al-Qaeda.

The resolution calls on all 193 UN member states to take “appropriate steps” to stop the trade of cultural property from Iraq and Syria. It also urges the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to help impose a ban on such a trade.

The measure asks governments across the world to “prevent terrorists from benefiting directly or indirectly from ransom payments from political concessions” in order to secure the release of hostages.

A report by the UN’s al-Qaeda monitoring team released late last year said that the ISIL militants are earning USD 850,000 to USD1.65 million each day from oil sales.

This is while reports says Arab countries such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been funding the Takfiri militants.

According to a report published by The Telegraph last year, wealthy individuals in the Persian Gulf region have raised millions of dollars for terrorist groups. It added that Arab leaders have either chosen to ignore the issue or are themselves complicit in the funding of terrorists.

The Takfiris control swathes of land in Syria and Iraq and have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.
