German deputy parliamentary head upbeat on Iran nuclear deal

31 Jan 2015 - 10:01

Berlin, Jan 30, IRNA -- German deputy parliament president, Claudia Roth reiterated her strong support for a negotiated settlement of the Iranian nuclear row.
Roth said in a commentary for the Hamburg-based weekly Zeit newspaper diplomatic talks between Iran and six world powers (US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany) were 'the right way' to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue once and for all.
She acknowledged the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the West were difficult and a solution was not expected to be easily obtained.

However, she stressed a comprehensive agreement which would allow Iran to use nuclear energy for civilian purposes, was within reach.

The top German lawmaker pointed to a number of 'optimistic' projections that the Iranian nuclear case could be solved by this summer, resulting ultimately in the removal of all sanctions against Tehran.

Roth returned earlier this week from a five-day visit to Iran where she led a parliamentary delegation to Tehran and Tabriz.

She held political talks with Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and his deputy Mohammed Hassan Aboutourabifard, in addition to Iranian deputy president for women and family affairs, Shahindokht Moulaverdi and Iran's vice-president and head of the environmental organization, Massoumeh Ebtekar.

The prominent Green legislator met also with Iranian vice-president on European and American affairs, Majid Takht-Ravanchi and legislators representing religious minorities as well as civic representatives.

The trip was aimed at deepening parliamentary ties and further emphasizing Iran's regional importance in the violence-stricken Mideast, Roth was quoted saying on her personal website.

A former leader of the pro-environment Green party, Roth toured also the shrinking Lake Oroumieh, which is in danger of completely drying up because of climate change and nearby farms using it for irrigation and the damming of rivers.
