Certain powers seek to sabotage Tehran-P5+1 talks: Iran Majlis Speaker

17 Dec 2012 - 15:45

Ali LarijaniIran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani says certain world powers seek to sabotage Tehran’s talks with the P5+1 group, comprising the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.
“Regarding Iran's nuclear energy program, certain world powers are preventing our country’s talks with the P5+1 from yielding results by creating problems and throwing spanners in the works,” Larijani said in a meeting with Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Bai Lichen in Tehran on Sunday.

Iran and the P5+1 have held several rounds of talks, chiefly over the Iranian nuclear energy program.

Describing the relations between Iran and China as a means for consolidating stability in the region, Larijani added, “The continuation of close bilateral consultations and talks regarding important regional and international issues could help peace and security in the region.”

The Iranian official added that Iranian and Chinese leaders are determined to expand all-out ties between the two countries.

Iran is currently China's third largest supplier of crude, providing Beijing with roughly 12 percent of its total annual oil consumption - nearly one million barrels per day.

Bai, for his part, stressed Iran’s right to use peaceful nuclear energy, adding that Tehran’s “independent policies” after the 1979 Islamic Revolution was the cause of the anti-Iranian sanctions imposed by the West.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program The US and some of its allies have used the unfounded pretext to impose several rounds of sanctions on Iran.

Iran denies the allegation and argues that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
