Cuba calls for further widening of ties with Iran

12 Jan 2015 - 13:28

TEHRAN (FNA)- President of the Cuban National Assembly's International Relations Commission Yolanda Ferrer called for the further expansion of Cuba-Iran bilateral ties, specially in parliamentary fields.

"Cuba is willing to continue its parliamentary solidarity with Iran and also expand the present unity and solidarity to the ties between the two nations," Ferrer said in a message to the Head of the Iranian Parliament's Library, Museum and Documents Center, Mohammad Rajabi Davani, on Sunday.

In November, Iranian and Cuban officials stressed the need for both Tehran and Havana to pave the ground for the further development of mutual cooperation in various spheres.

In a meeting between Co-chairman of Iran-Cuba parliamentary friendship group Abdolreza Mesri and Cuban Ambassador to Iran Vladimir Gonzalez on Tuesday, Mesri said that the Iranian and Cuban parliaments, as two influential bodies in foreign policy of their own governments, enjoy high potentials to develop economic cooperation and they should use the capacities to serve the goal.

He said Iranian and Cuban parliamentary friendship group is well-prepared for upgrading ties between the two countries.

Mesri said that regular consultations of the senior officials within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other international and regional organizations would help explore the capacity for economic cooperation.

Gonzales, for his part, said Iranian and Cuban parliamentary and state officials would help the economic cooperation keep up with the excellent level of political relations.

In recent years, Iran has been seeking to enhance its relations with Latin American countries within the framework of international organizations such as the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), whose rotating presidency is currently held by Iran.

Official International Monetary Fund (IMF) statistics show that Tehran’s annual trade with the Latin American countries has exceeded $3bln.
