Iran lawmaker says U.S. sanctions against Iran "futile"

24 Dec 2014 - 21:16

Iranian lawmaker Mansour HaqiqatpourTEHRAN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iranian lawmaker Mansour Haqiqatpour said Saturday that the U.S. unilateral sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program have proved to be "futile," Press TV reported.
The member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said that the U.S. imposition of new sanctions against Iran at a time that Tehran is negotiating with International Atomic Energy Agency shows that "the West is not sincere in its approach towards Iran."

Haqiqatpour made the remarks referring to the new sanctions by the United States to rev up the pressure on Iran over its controversial nuclear program.

On Thursday, the United States imposed sanctions on seven more Iranian entities and five individuals.

"The West pursues the policy of carrot and stick on Iran's nuclear program. On the on hand, it talks about negotiations and, on the other hand, it imposes new sanctions against Iran," Haqiqatpour said, adding that Iran does not negotiate with anyone over its national interests.

Iran is under a number of unilateral Western sanctions on its oil and financial sectors over its controversial nuclear program.

The United States and its Western allies have accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian nuclear program, a charge Tehran has consistently denied.
