Prominent Iranian linguist and scholar Hormoz Milanian has passed away at the age of 77 in France.
He was suffering from Alzheimer’s in recent years and died at a hospital in the French capital, Paris, on November 12.
Milanian, known as one of the pioneer Iranian linguists, educated many students in Iran. His efforts to promote linguistics as well as his achievements in the area brought him great fame.
He was the first Iranian student of André Martinet, a famous French linguist influential by his work on structural linguistics.
Milanian also served as a visiting professor at Paris Sorbonne University in 1979. Six years later, he was appointed as the head of the Persian language department of the prestigious French university.
The late professor was also a teacher of Modern General Linguistics at the University of Tehran.
A number of prominent Iranian linguists and lecturers are slated to attend a memorial ceremony on November 18 in the capital city of Tehran to pay tribute to the late professor, Milanian.
