Envoy calls for Tehran-Moscow joint efforts against Western sanctions

15 Oct 2014 - 0:45

TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Ambassador to Tehran Levan Jagarian called for broader cooperation between Iran and Russia to nullify the impacts of the US-led western sanctions against the two countries.
"We can remove the problems caused by the western sanctions against Iran and Russia by increasing the trade exchanges between the two countries," Jagarian told FNA on Monday.

Jagarian reiterated that Iran and Russia can overcome the sanctions.

He pointed to the exchange of visits by Iranian and Russian diplomatic and trade delegations, and said, "Iran and Russia have strategic relations and the two meetings between the two countries' presidents in Astrakhan of Russia and Tajik capital city of Dushanbe is a sign of such relations."

The Russian ambassador pointed to the presence of Russia's Navy Fleet in the Northern Iranian port of Anzali, and said, "The Russian naval fleet berthed in Anzali port for the first time seven years ago and two Iranian Naval fleets also visited Astrakhan, Russia, last year."

He underlined that the presence of the Russian navy fleet is a sign of good relations between Iran and Russia in different areas.

The European Union, alongside the United States, has introduced several rounds of sanctions against Russia over its alleged involvement in the Ukrainian crisis, an allegation Moscow has repeatedly denied. The latest batch of sanctions targeted Russian energy and defense companies, as well as certain individuals.

On September 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said ultimatums were an inefficient way of communicating with Russia, a country open to cooperation. Moscow also said that sanctions posed a threat to international peace and stability and contradicted the principles of international law.

Last month, an Iranian trade official announced that Tehran and Moscow have a plan to replace the US dollar with their national currencies in bilateral transactions.

Speaking in the 46th meeting of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Head of Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce Assadollah Asqar Oladi said the Central Bank of Iran is studying a proposal for replacement of the US dollar with the Iranian rial and Russian ruble in their reciprocal trade exchanges.

He referred to western sanctions against Tehran and Moscow and said that use of national currencies instead of the American dollar in bilateral trade exchanges can boost the two countries' economic cooperation.

In the last several years, Iran and Russia have had vast cooperation in different fields, specially in political and economic spheres.

The two states also enjoy special positions on the international scene and have long had constant and regular consultations on key regional and global issues.
