Iran’s Larijani: Terrorism a common concern among IPU members

14 Oct 2014 - 17:13

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani emphasized that the issue of terrorism is a common concern among member states of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 131st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Larijani commented on his separate meetings with parliament speakers of the IPU members, saying, “There was a common concern in all meetings and negotiations, a concern about the alarming issue of brutal acts of terrorism in the region.”

“Some European countries are concerned that their nationals would join terrorist groups,” he explained, adding that their parliaments have passed strict laws and imposed heavy penalties for those who join such terrorist groups.

He went on to say that many countries have also acknowledged Iran’s role in combatting terrorism and support it.

Larijani further noted that many countries are also concerned about the measures adopted by the US-led coalition against the ISIL and its plans for fighting terrorism, and consider the claims raised by the coalition about war on terrorism as "quite impractical".

Earlier on Monday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had dismissed as "lie" the US-led war against the ISIL, stressing that the real objective is to sow discord among the Muslim nations.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the emergence of Takfiri moves in Iraq, Syria and some other countries as the result of a planning by the arrogant powers for creating rift among Muslims.

As the security condition in Iraq has deteriorated in a fresh outbreak of violence since June, when the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant terrorist group seized parts of territory in the Arab country, Iran has always voiced support for any initiative aimed at bringing back security and stability to Iraq.

The ISIL terrorists have also threatened other communities, including Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, and others, in Iraq.

They have been committing heinous crimes in the areas they have taken, including the mass execution of civilians as well as Iraqi army troops and officers.
