Children’s week celebrations officially kick off in Iran with the message "Hi, I’m a Child"

The opening ceremony of the national children’s week was held in Tehran’s Milad tower on Monday 06 October with the presence of senior officials and ministers from government and non-government organizations as well as thousands of school children.

Photo credit: Fars News Agency8th October is celebrated every year as children’s day in Iran and this year the government decided to hold one week of celebrations from 6 to 12 October for children naming each day of the week after one of the children’s rights including quality education, family and play, peace and security, child rights, media, cultural heritage and health. In the opening ceremony, the Minister of Education, Minister of Justice as well as vice president in women and family affairs, made valuable speeches on children and child rights. Stating that from this year, schools will be engaged in child rights trainings as per the president’s command the Minister of Education, Mr. Faani said” as a ministry working on building human characters, we are going to make children familiar with their rights and take up social education along with cultural education.”

UNICEF Iran Officer in Charge for Representative, Hasmik Gaginyan, in the middle, standing on the stage with government officials to hand appreciation awards in the ceremonyMeanwhile the Minister of Justice, Mr. Pour-mohammadi talked about the development of a policy called” national policy on child rights” in near future by the National Body on Convention on the Rights of the Child ( the NBCRC) as an inclusive policy document on children’s issues. In another parts of the ceremony, the vice president in women and family affairs, Ms Molaverdi in her speech referred to the importance of the four core principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child namely the non-discrimination, best interests of the child, the right to participation and the right to survival. She also highlighted considering an equity-based approach in government planning for children.

UNICEF Iran Officer in Charge for Representative Ms. Hasmik Gaginyan, was invited to the stage along with other senior officials to hand out awards to dedicated people who were appreciated for their achievements in the area of child rights.

Minister of Education, Mr Faani, speaking at the opening ceremony of Children’s WeekA government task force for planning the celebrations was formally held since two months ago led by the Ministry of Education and represented by many other organizations including Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Ministry of Interior, IRIB, President’s office for women and family affairs, Tehran Traffic police, the Cultural Heritage Organization, the Youth organization of the Red Crescent and UNICEF Iran Office. The unity and solidarity of so many organizations working for children on the occasion of children’s day is something to be appreciated and further promoted.
