The lower house of Britain’s parliament plans to hold a vote on a motion about the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state.
During the session, which is scheduled to be held on October 13, British lawmakers will be asked whether they believe the government should recognize the state of Palestine.
“It’s against the government position, but it’s not an attack on them as such, we just feel that now’s the time [to] shout out loud that this should be done,” said Grahame Morris, a lawmaker sponsoring the debate.
The British legislator also described the statehood of Palestine as “the inalienable right” of its people.

The parliamentary vote will be held just days after Sweden declared that it would formally recognize the state of Palestine, a move that bitterly irked Israeli authorities.

Stockholm’s decision will have to be approved by the parliament to make Sweden the first EU state to recognize Palestine’s sovereignty.

Sweden was among the countries that voted to upgrade Palestine’s status to non-member observer state at the United Nations General Assembly on November 29, 2012.

Last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he would take measures to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) if the United States vetoed a UN Security Council motion to condemn Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East al-Quds (Jerusalem), and the besieged Gaza Strip and are demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian lands.

Tel Aviv, however, has refused to return to the 1967 borders and is unwilling to discuss the issue of al-Quds.
