Iran awarded another taekwondo gold in Youth Olympics

Iranian junior taekwondo practitioner Kimiya Alizadeh has managed to pick up a gold medal in the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in China, and raise the country’s total medal count at the prestigious sports event.
On Wednesday, the Iranian female athlete exhibited her skills in her march to final competition at Longjiang Gymnasium in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing, situated 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) southeast of the capital Beijing, in the minus 63-kilogram division.

She overcame her Colombian and Belgian opponents 12-2 and 15-2 respectively, before defeating a contestant from Cameroon 23-0 in the semi-final.

Alizadeh overwhelmed a representative from Russia 10-7 in the last contest, and collected the junior gold medal.

Earlier in the day, Danial Salehimehr fetched a junior bronze medal for Iran in the minus 73-kilogram class.

On Tuesday, 18-year-old Iranian judoka Ramin Safaviyeh emerged victorious in the final competition of the +81-kilogram weight category against Rostislav Dashkov from Kyrgyzstan, and won the gold.

On Saturday, Iranian sportsman Mehdi Es’haqi claimed Iran’s first junior gold medal in the minus 48-kilogram weight division after he managed to down Wang Chen-Yu from Chinese Taipei 17-9.

The 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games opened in the Chinese city of Nanjing on August 16, and will wrap up on August 28. A total of 222 events are expected to be held over the tournament.

Iran is taking part in the Youth Olympics with 16 athletes in swimming, judo, shooting, equestrian, athletics, taekwondo, beach volleyball, Greco-Roman wrestling and weightlifting.
