“We have emphasized before all political leaderships in Lebanon that the Energy Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to offer all its resources and capacities to sustain the development projects related to the water and electricity [sector in Lebanon],” Namjoo was quoted as saying by the NNA on Saturday following a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati.

“I would also like to emphasize that Iran has adopted a firm and strategic position to support Lebanon in all sectors in which it considers there to be a dire need to do so.”

Earlier on Saturday, March 14 MP Boutros Harb objected to the memorandum signed on Friday by Energy Minister Gebran Bassil and his Iranian counterpart to fund the construction of the Balaa dam in Batroun.

Lebanon has been hit by a long and acute energy crisis which prompted the current government to find alternative ways to secure a solution to the power shortages that have caused several protests by disgruntled citizens.

The efforts have, however, been hampered by the deep political schisms between opponents to the current government mainly led by March 8 and Hezbollah politicians and the pro-Western March 14 coalition.
