Final nuclear deal possible if other side serious: Zarif

22 Jun 2014 - 14:15

Iranian foreign minister says negotiations between Iran and six world powers over Tehran’s nuclear energy program are likely to bear fruit as long as the other side takes the talks seriously enough.
Noting that Tehran wants nothing more than its legal rights, Mohammad Javad Zarif added on Sunday that some negotiators in the other side stick to their previous positions during the talks.

He emphasized that if nuclear negotiations prove ineffective, both sides have the right to go back to policies they pursued before the interim deal was clinched between them in the Swiss city of Geneva last November.
“Should an agreement is not struck in Vienna, every party reserves the right to return to policies they pursued prior to the Geneva accord, and this includes the Iranian side,” Zarif said.
Zarif made the comments in a joint press conference with his New Zealander counterpart, Murry McCully, in Tehran, during which the Iranian foreign minister praised New Zealand’s support for Iran’s nuclear energy program.

New Zealand’s top diplomat, for his part, welcomed Iran’s constructive engagement with the six world powers – the US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China – hoping for the expansion of economic ties between Tehran and Wellington once Iran’s nuclear talks end with a comprehensive solution.

Iran and the six countries have been discussing ways to iron out differences and start drafting a final deal that would end the decade-old dispute over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

The two sides inked an interim accord in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 23, 2013.

On June 18, the Iranian foreign minister said the two sides had started drafting a final deal despite the remaining “fundamental” differences, adding that if the other side shows political will, a comprehensive accord could be reached.
