The Abbasi Jameh (congregational) mosque on the southern side of Naqsh-e Jahan Sq. is one of the most important monuments from the Safavid era. It presents the apex of 1,000 years of mosque construction in Iran.
The construction began c. 1640 with the order of Shah Abbas I in the 24th anniversary of his rule. The decorations and accessories were completed by his successors.
