Iran faithful to nuclear commitments: Analyst

8 Dec 2013 - 16:57

Iran’s all-out efforts to resolve the issues regarding its nuclear energy program show Tehran’s faithfulness to its commitments, a political analyst tells Press TV.
In a Sunday interview, Kaveh Afrasiabi pointed to Iran’s efforts in a “three-part process” - namely its talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), its implementation of the interim nuclear deal with the sextet of world powers and its continuation of talks with the six countries - and praised them as steps “in the right direction that shows that Iran is faithfully doing its part of the bargain.”

Iran’s nuclear agreement specifically bars the other parties to the pact from imposing new sanctions, the analyst said, adding however, that the pro-Israeli lobby in US Congress seeks to “torpedo” the deal by pushing for new sanctions against Tehran.
“It remains to be seen how much leverage the pro-Israel forces can have on the White House in the weeks and months to come,” Afrasiabi pointed out.
On November 24, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - the US, Russia, France, China, and Britain - plus Germany sealed an agreement to lay the groundwork for the resolution of the West’s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

According to the agreement, in exchange for Tehran’s confidence-building measure to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic would be lifted.

Earlier in November, Iran and the IAEA agreed on a roadmap for more cooperation on outstanding nuclear issues.

Under the agreement, Iran would, on a voluntary basis, allow the IAEA inspectors to visit Arak heavy water plant and Gachin uranium mine in Bandar Abbas, in southern Iran.
