Iran presence at Geneva II to aid peace: Analyst

2 Nov 2013 - 14:16

Iran’s presence at the Geneva II conference on the crisis in Syria will lay the groundwork for stability and peace across the Middle East, a political analyst says,Press TV reports.
In a Thursday article on Press TV website, Amir Dabiri Mehr pointed to two approaches toward Iran ahead of the planned negotiations, saying the first view indulges in propaganda and making allegations against Tehran “to kill any chance for Iran to attend the talks and help the settlement of the crisis,” while the second approach propounds that Tehran, as “an influential player,” must be cordially invited to the event.

The analyst argued that if the second approach manages to prevail over the first one with respect to the Geneva II talks, “the preparations will be made for constructive developments in the Middle East under the aegis of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s cooperation.”
“These developments could result in peace and stability in the region at much lower costs and even set the stage for new changes in the Middle East despite much expected hindrance and opposition,” Dabiri Mehr pointed out.
In May, Russia and the United States proposed the second conference to be held in Geneva but Syria’s divided opposition has so far balked at attending the event.

The so-called Syrian National Coalition (SNC) says it will not take part in the proposed meeting if President Bashar al-Assad’s resignation is not on the table. The group is expected to meet on November 9 to decide on its participation in the talks.

On October 27, over 20 foreign-backed militant groups said in a joint statement that anyone who attends the peace talks would be committing “treason” and “would have to answer for it before our courts.”

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
