A political analyst says tensions in Iran-US ties cannot simply disappear by a mere phone call as there is still ‘a long way to go’ to build confidence between the two countries, Press TV reports.
Dr. Mohammad Marandi, a professor at the University of Tehran, told Press TV on Sunday that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif have stressed on numerous occasions that Iran’s peaceful nuclear rights “are not up for grabs.”
“I think there’s a long way to go and it’s quite possible that at the end of the day in the coming years the United States simply does not have the political will to accept Iran’s rights,” said the analyst.
On September 27, President Rouhani and his US counterpart, Barack Obama, had a landmark phone conversation, mainly focusing on Iran’s nuclear energy program. It was the first direct contact between an Iranian and American presidents since the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Marandi further said the recent detente between Tehran and Washington has “taken the excuse away from the United States,” which accused the Islamic Republic of “being aggressive” in the past, adding, “Americans can no longer easily demonize the president and use that as an excuse to block a solution.”

“I think an important thing is that Iran is putting the United States to the test. And even if the United States fails in recognizing Iran and its rights, the international community will isolate the United States further and it will be much more difficult for the United States to maintain pressure on Iran,” Marandi said.
