Iran Daily| Seyyed Jalal Sadatian: The Iran nuclear deal is based on political and technical dimensions. In fact, the agreement not only resulted in the lifting of nuclear-related sanctions against Iran, but it technically led to the recognition of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities.

It has often been suggested that nuclear talks were held between Iran and the P5+1 (the US, Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany). However, apart from these countries, two legal entities, namely the European Union and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were part of the negotiations.

Meanwhile, the role of the IAEA in the technical field – particularly with regard to its duties in verifying and reporting Iran’s measures – is of great significance.

Presently, IAEA’s reports on Iran’s commitments to the JCPOA bear greater significance. This is because US President Donald Trump is attempting to push Iran to violate the deal.

The reports that IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano has so far submitted to the Board of Governors reaffirm Iran’s rightfulness and commitments to the JCPOA.

According to the reports, Tehran has complied with all the terms of the deal. The IAEA’s reports are one of the mechanisms that the United Nations Security Council can use to see whether Tehran has met its commitments.

The IAEA reports as well as the EU’s support for the Iran nuclear deal will make it difficult for Trump – who has threatened to scrap or renegotiate the JCPOA – to violate the deal.

Besides, the US is the only member of the P5+1 which regards the JCPOA as a ‘bad deal,’ while the five other members have reaffirmed that they would remain committed.

The EU, China and Russia are fully aware that their measures would help protect the JCPOA as an international accord.

In fact, these nations have accepted commitments and, therefore, make efforts not to have their international prestige tarnished, or their trade with Iran diminished.

Hence, the US president knows that he cannot exert pressure on Iran through the nuclear deal because the negotiating sides and the IAEA have reaffirmed Iran’s full compliance.

Besides, UNSC Resolution 2231, which endorsed the JCPOA, guarantees the accord.

As a result, Trump resorts to allegations against the Islamic Republic such as human rights violations, missile tests and supporting terrorism to press ahead with his anti-Iran plans.

Since Trump and Republicans harbor anti-Iran feelings, it is likely that they will adopt policies against Tehran.

The White House can impose unilateral sanctions to pile pressure on Iran. However, it seems unlikely that other major countries will toe its line.
