Symbolically, House republicans vote to block Iran deal

14 Sep 2015 - 12:00

President Barack Obama enjoyed a major policy win last week when Democrats managed to rally enough votes to stop Congress from blocking a nuclear agreement with Iran.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who was one of just four Democrats in the Senate to oppose the deal, said the deal only manages or works to contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

On Thursday, the Senate held a vote on whether to reject the resolution, the opposite of the language in the House resolution.

It is expected, though, that neither bill will be taken up by the Senate – meaning they will become merely symbolic actions.

Senate action on Thursday all but guaranteed that any legislation disapproving of the deal willnever reach Obama’s desk.

“I am heartened that so many senators judged this issue on the merits, and am gratified by the strong support of lawmakers and citizens alike”, he said. “We obviously feel quite confident in our ability to move forward with the rest of the global community” in implementing the deal, he said.

“There’s no new sanctions relief under the JCPOA until Iran has completed the necessary steps that it needs to complete with the IAEA to verify the status of their nuclear programme and that it’s peaceful”, he asserted.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Republicans will keep trying to stop the deal from being implemented.

If indeed these promises and assurances are achieved, as I hope they will be, then those of us whohave been opponents of the deal will owe a big apology to supporters.

“The benefits afforded Iran will enable them to, with our approval, construct new weapons, fund their well-known terrorist allies, and continue to menace Israel, one of our closest allies and the only democratic government in the Middle East”, Salmon said.

Across town, Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and other conservatives, including former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, were preparing to headline an anti-deal rally on the lawn of the Capitol.

But that hasn’t stopped Republicans from continuing to fight the deal, which they insist will fill Iran’s coffers while failing to create a robust nuclear inspection regime. The House passed another resolution rejecting the deal today and has more votes scheduled for next week.

“This vote is a victory for diplomacy, for American national security, and for the safety and security of the world“, President Barack Obama said after the vote. “We will not let the American people down”. In the Texas delegation, Representative Gene Green and Filemon Vela bothcrossed party lines to vote against the Iran deal.

The next reason was the law gave 60 days of time but the republicans said that they can’t vote their decision regarding the issue as all the relevant documents were not submitted.
