Iran’s latest revolution is all about fashion

23 Aug 2015 - 13:12

There is another revolution taking place in Iran, and this time it is all about fashion.

Thanks to an edict that now allows fashion and modeling under Islam, fashion weeks are popping up all over Iran, including the upcoming Darab Fashion Week.

According to The Guardian, the fashion event in Darab will take place in September and at the Esteghal Hotel.

With an increase of events, the number of models needed for Iran Fashion Week has also increased. EnterBehpooshi, the first modeling agency in the country to get official permission to operate.

“If I say that fashion in Iran has gone through a revolution in the past year, I haven’t exaggerated,” Sharif Razavi, Behpooshi’s director, told the Guardian. “In around 30 years since the revolution, we saw around 10 to 15 catwalks in the country, but in the last year alone, we’ve seen more than a hundred.”

Before the edict allowing fashion and modeling, the modeling agency operated underground. However, while it’s now legal there are still restrictions.

Over two days, the works of Iranian designers will be displayed, and while women can attend men’s shows, men will not be allowed at women’s shows. Attendance is by invitation only, and there are still many with negative views of fashion in the Muslim country.

However, thanks to the now legal fashion industry, independent designers such as Salar Bil and Farnaz Abdoli are getting exposure abroad and helping eradicate stereotypes.

“When people see our work, they are shocked,” Abdoli said. “They expect women in Iran to wear veils and niqabs but then they see our models and designs and they can’t believe what they see.”
